Memory - Words, Where are You?
Brain Area Working
How To Play
Get a comprehensive workout with this exercise that consists of memorizing 6, 8 or 10 words and their location on a grid.
Cognitive Function Exercised
This exercise is an incentive to create links between two items, a verbal item (a word) and a visual item (its location). This link makes their memorization easier. The main brain area at play is the left temporal lobe which is involved in verbal memory as opposed to the right temporal lobe which is involved in visual memory.
Benefits to Daily Life
Verbal memory is an essential skill for remembering conversations, doing crossword puzzles or keeping track of written material of any sort such as shopping lists or key elements of a novel. Further, we rely upon spatial memory when we try to recall the location of shops on a street, products in a grocery store or a friend's house in a neighborhood. The efficiency of our memory is enhanced when we can use cues from one system to help retrieve information from the other.
